Remember the late-2009 Windows Mobile 6.5-running HTC HTD? Of course you do, since modders have used it to run a variety of mobile operating systems on it including Android. And now, the four-year old handset does KitKat as well.
As you can see in the video above, the HTC HD2 runs Android 4.4, which is quite a performance for such an old device. Of course, we’re looking at a custom ROM based on KitKat that’s running on the HTC HD2, and that’s SlimKat 4.4 Beta 1.
Sure, not everything runs flawlessly on the HD2, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see existing issues – affecting the SD card, Wi-Fi and data connectivity – to be ironed out in the future.
The main point here is that KitKat is running on a device that was launched in late 2009 or early 2010 (depending on market) and which never ran Android officially. The handset packs a 1GHz single-core Qualcomm Scorpion processor and 512MB of RAM, in case you were wondering.

This is another piece of evidence that shows KitKat can be installed on a variety of older Android devices, especially the more popular handsets, which is exactly what Google would want. After all, we’ve seen KitKat builds created for the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus S and the Nexus One, even though these devices aren’t officially supported anymore.

Of course, now its up to Android device makers to decide which older devices to upgrade to KitKat.
